Lands Ciabinet Secretary, Zakary Mwangi Njeru has urged the leadership of Nyeri County government to partner with the national government in the development of affordable housing project.
Njeru whose ministry is also in charge of Housing and Physical Planning called on the County Governor, Mutahi Kahiga to avail land while the National Government seeks for funds to actualise the project that is one of the Kenya Kwanza agenda.
“I am urging the Nyeri governor to give us land so that we can start building houses that are affordable by all. Once we have the land, the National government will look for funds to develop the houses,” the CS observed yesterday while attending the burial of former Mathira MP, the late Matu Wamae.
Governor Kahiga who was also present embraced the proposal and agreed to have a meeting with the minister in January and discuss the way forward. The county has five major towns; Nyeri that houses the county headquarters, Karatina, Othaya, Mukureweini and Naromoru.
There are old estates in Nyeri and Karatina houses constructed by former local authorities and inherited by the devolved unit.
There have been proposals in the past to bring down the houses and construct more decent several storey buildings that could accommodate more residents.
