President William Ruto & CS Moses Kuria
By: Joseph Mutua Ndonga
Worth Noting:
- When Dr Ruto fired the warning, Kuria had made reference to a certain senior leader (Ruto did not disclose the name and the regime that the official served) who used to be always drunk but managed to stop this habit which at times left him embarrassed and ridiculed. I promise to follow the footsteps. I know I can completely stop drinking.
- As a writer and political analyst, I want to say this. We know that those running alcoholic businesses contribute enormously to the growth of our economy.
A few days ago, President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua attended the burial of Trade cabinet secretary (CS) Moses Kuria’s sister.
Dr Ruto took this opportunity to thank the CS for his heeding call.
He was referring to a piece of advise he had given his CSs and other top government officials, who were taking too much alcohol, during their swearing-in.
Under my leadership, I won’t tolerate this. I want you to stop taking the stuff but if it is hard just imbibe little of it. It is worth to note Dr Ruto is teetotaller.
Ruto added. No one will be allowed to see me at State House when drunk.
Kenyans’ wished to see leaders (both elective and appointive) dealing with the myriad of the problems they were facing but not drunkards.
This job is not only flagging them out but more importantly offering practical solutions.
I will not hesitate to fire those who will not toe the line.
During the burial, President Ruto noted. Look at CS Kuria’s direct in his eyes. They look good.
Initially they had another color and this was in apparent reference to being red.
I’m happy he has heeded my call.Β I’m sure even his wife, children and extended family are happy. This explains why I have decided to talk about this issue before you.
Kuria stood up, smiled all through as he nodded in agreement.

As a writer and political analyst, I want to say this. We know that those running alcoholic businesses contribute enormously to the growth of our economy.
The state collects revenues that run into billions of shillings every year.
Besides, these industries help in creating thousands of jobs for Kenyans.
During the reign of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, a number of the manufacturers had fallenΒ into trouble with his administration and closed down.
This was of failing to meet tax obligations. They included Naivasha based Keroche (it is owned by Tabitha Karanja, Nakuru county woman representative) and Thika based Wine and Spirit which is owned by Hamphrey Kariuki, the current chairman of National Investment Authority.
Kenya Kwanza (KK) has since lifted the ban. This followed meetings between them and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) during which they reached a consensus on payment plan.
In view of this, one thing is clear. President’s position did not amount to outlawing the alcohol beverages.
Kenyans are free to drink so long as the stuff they take meets the health standard requirements.
However, this business needed to be regulated.Β This would help to ensure Kenyans spend much of their time in activities that helps to uplift thier living standards and growth of our economy.
At the end of the day, they take little of it and only drink after working hours.
