Changes In National Assembly Leadership As Mwenje Replaces Chege As The Deputy Minority Whip

Embakasi West MP, Mark Mwenje has replaced nominated MP Sabina Chege as the National Assembly’s Deputy Minority Whip.
This follows a communication that was read to the House by the Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, during yesterday’s session.
“Hon. Members I guide the house as follows; that there currently exist no bar against the decision made by the minority party to replace its deputy whip Standing order 20 (a) 5 requires the speaker to convey a decision to replace a whip to the House. In this regard the Hon. Mark Mwenje forth with replaces Sabina Chege MP as the Deputy Whip of the Minority Party,” the Speaker told the House.
According to the Speaker, a Party or Coalition of Parties are allowed by the house Standing Orders to designate their leaders, deputy leaders, whips and their deputies upon recognition as a parliamentary party.
In his communication to the House, the Speaker stated that the replacement of Chege had earlier been suspended following a court order issued by Kiambu High Court on 30th May, 2023.
“Honorable Members, you will recall that on Thursday, 8th June 2023, I issued a communication on update on the replacement of Deputy Minority Whip. In that communication, I did guide the House that the correspondence received on the replacement of Hon. Sabina Chege as the Deputy Minority Whip had been effectively suspended by a court order. The order in question was issued on 30th May, 2023 at Kiambu High Court,” Speaker Wetang’ula said.
However, the Speaker disclosed that the same court has since dismissed the matter, and a communication on the same has been sent to the National Assembly.
“I wish to inform the House the development in the cited case. My office now is in receipt of a ruling delivered by the Kiambu High Court dismissing the matter,” he said.
Chege who is a nominated MP under the Jubilee party has been at loggerheads with members affiliated with the Azimio Coalition party who accused her of working closely with the Kenya Kwanza coalition which forms the current government.
