Mumias East MP Peter Salysa Clashes and Governor Fernandes Barasa

Mumias East Mp Peter Salysa Clashed with a supporter of Kakamega governor Fernandes Barasa on Sunday at a fundraising event at Bukaya Catholic church in Mumias West, over his remarks about the governor’s contribution towards sugarcane farmers in Mumias.
During his address, the first time Mp had questioned the leadership of the governor Barasa, which has failed to help the sugarcane farmers from the region, amid closure of Mumias Sugar Company and other factories in the region.
“The people of Kakamega voted you the as their governor with expectations and hopes of making things better, that is why they want to see things happening. Everytime I get in collisions with a lot of people over this issue, that’s why some of the people are mumbling.” Said the lawmaker.
The MP who has been vocal on issues regarding sugarcane farming in Western, particular the Mumias Sugar Company, had called out the governor to talk about his contribution towards the motion in parliament for the farmers in the region. This was received by heckles and attack from one of governor’s supporter, who attacked the lawmaker on stage, with attempts to take away the microphone from the Member of Parliament.

Speaking after the situation returned to normalcy, Kakamega governor Fernandes Barasa said he was not only elected for his eligibility as a leader, but as a sugarcane champion, and through the collaboration with the national government, the sector will be revived and be operational to benefit the larger Western and Nyanza Region.
“I was voted as champion governor of sugarcane in Western Kenya. We are working closely working with President William Ruto to ensure that the sugarcane sector in the region operational.” Stated the governor.
“We cannot seat and watch the sugarcane sector die in our hands. We will revive and make the sugarcane industry very vibrant. Working is already going at Nzoia Sugar factory; tractors are already at work ensuring that the company comes back to life.” Further added the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula.
Despite of the commotion between governor Barasa’s and Lawmaker Peter Salysa supporters, the leaders in attendance distanced themselves in commenting about the violence and restricted themselves to focus in working together as a community and region to ensure the sugarcane sector is operational.
During his visit in the region, the president had assured the residents of Kakamega that the government will not privatize the Sugar companies, as they are settling in ancestoral home, but look into ways that will help farmers benefit from their efforts.
