Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome has said that the affordable housing project in Nyeri had to be temporarily stopped to allow contractors to make adjustments to the construction design.
“We changed the design after awarding the contract, and because of those changes, a delay occurred. We also had to revise the contract and the budget,” said the CS.
The project, initially intended to build 320 housing units at the Blue Valley site in Majengo within Nyeri town was halted due to the soil’s inability to hold the proposed number of floors.
The ministry has now revised building designs to accommodate more housing units. The project has also led to a revised contract and budget.
The government plans to build a total of 1 million affordable housing units by 2027, which translates to a minimum of 200,000 housing units annually.
