Cancer Care Centre, Nyeri Hospice on Saturday hosted a charity walk towards raising funds for its operations. Dozens of firms and individuals joined  the 10 kilometer walk in Nyeri town. Local leaders, community members, and dedicated volunteers usually come together every year to support the Nyeri Hospice’s mission, advocating for enhanced healthcare services in the region. The leading Water and Sanitation firm in East African region, Nyeri Water and Sanitation Company (Nyewasco) staff were among the hundreds who took part in the charity walk. An official of the water services provider noted that the walk not only raises essential funds but also strengthens community bonds, underscoring Nyewasco’s ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals in need.

In an intelligence-led operation, a joint team of officers drawn from General Duties, DCI and APS Garissa have successfully apprehended three individuals suspected of orchestrating a string of violent robberies in the Burburis area of Garissa Sub-County. Ali Isaac Muhumed, aka “Jografia,” 38, and Muhumed Bare Hussein, 30, were flashed out of their hideout in Burburis and arrested alongside Habiba Yusuf, 70, who provided them with refuge after their criminal escapades. Upon raiding their hideout, law enforcement officers unearthed a treasure trove of incriminating evidence, including an AK47 rifle with serial number A082674 and 6 rounds of ammunition, 12 mobile phones and two knives, among other damning items. The trio were escorted to Garissa Police Station for processing pending arraignment today.

Police Officers based at Kadzandani Police Station in Nyali Sub-County have made a significant headway in the war against trafficking in narcotics after seizing cannabis with a street value of over Sh25 million. Acting on a tip-off from vigilant members of the public, the officers zeroed in on a notorious trafficker plying his illicit trade at Green Estate in Kiembeni. Upon raiding the trafficker’s den, the officers hit a jackpot, uncovering 16 hefty sacks of cannabis weighing 864.9kgs with an estimated street value of Sh25,407,000. Cynthia Anyango, 30 who was found in the trafficker’s house  was apprehended  and is assisting the police in search of the main suspect who slipped through the police’s fingers.

Elgon Kenya Company Director Dr. Vimal Kantaria said his company will continue to provide certified seeds and eco-friendly farm inputs and chemicals to the horticulture sector in line with the changing needs in the market and emerging issues of climate change. The horticulture sub-sector, which includes vegetables, flowers, fruits, and medicinal aromatic plants, is among the key sectors of agriculture in Kenya, contributing to foreign exchange, household incomes, and food and nutrition security. It employs about 6.5 million Kenyans, directly and indirectly. Horticulture is the largest sub-sector of agriculture, contributing 33 per cent of the Agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The horticulture industry is made up of five commodities: vegetables (accounting for 44.6 per cent of the total value of produce); flowers (20.3 per cent); fruits (29.6 per cent); nuts; and medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPS) (5.8 per cent).

Oparanya said that Saccos must intentionally prioritise the growth of their capital from internally generated sources through the retention of surpluses. “As co-operative leaders, we need to boldly communicate to our members that capital retention is healthy and only helps guarantee the longevity of our co-operatives by ensuring they are better prepared to absorb future shocks,” said the CS. He at the same time called on employers to remit deductions to Sacco’s, saying that according to the Sacco Supervision Report 2023, there is a worrying trend where regulated Sacco’s are owed over Sh2.59 billion due to non-remittance by various employers.
