Worth Noting:
- Many universities have demonstrated what can be used to sieve the tomorrow’s leaders. With a small fraction to represent the national politics, many aspirants have had their share of weeping.
- Since the start of implementation of what is now famously known as the Duale bill, campus politics has greatly been revolutionized; money has taken the centre stage. Delegates are elected first then they’re used to elect the seniors in the higher rank i.e. the chairperson, secretary general among other higher ranking positions. With the number of delegates being a handful, those vying for student governing council have an added advantage to persuade a smaller group.
As student grow ambitions also grows; the desire to lead develops. We’re conversant with Babu’s scenario, how he rose from the chairman SONU to KUSO then rising to be the Member of Parliament representing Embakasi East. From his rise, many students have been encouraged and have used him as an idol to copy in the political field.
Many universities have recently carried out their representative elections and from there a clear picture can be drawn from the dots gotten. Many universities have demonstrated what can be used to sieve the tomorrow’s leaders. With a small fraction to represent the national politics, many aspirants have had their share of weeping.

The bill in question has raised concerns among students as they’re being denied the chance to exercise their democratic rights of directly voting their preferred candidates. Speaking to the recently elected student governing council from Egerton University headed by Denis Odero, Brian Bett as the secretary general and Josiah Kisaghi as the director academics, they pleaded for the review of the bill so that students can be allowed to vote their representatives. The delegate system has greatly lowered the powers of the students on matters welfare.
A larger percentage of the student body knows not their leaders and with this, whenever they’ve got issues they swallow it resulting to chocking thus the rise in cases of comrades taking their lives. The kind of leadership currently being experienced in our universities is not involving all the students and thus there is very little help they afford to the comrade fraternity. With this kind of election the university administration finds it easier to manoeuvre in the association and thus influencing their decisions.
As the delegate system takes shape in the Kenyan universities, students are left in awe how the system gives a win to the less deemed candidates. Money becomes the order of the day to win the delegates. Meetings are held throughout the night to draw strategies that will perhaps yield positive results. In the just concluded elections, Egerton University on 26th April the student aspirants were subjected to secret ballot voting system after two weeks of peaceful campaigns, and immediately after that on 28th the student governing council was elected with the chairperson position being eyed by two, Boaz Omunga and Denis Odero.
The election was full of pressure that no one was on the losing side; both the aspirants were horses. It was a tough one that resulted to the winner leading with a margin of one vote.
Congratulations to Denis Odero, the newly elected chairperson Egerton University students association, EUSA. Our eyes are still out watching on the swearing in speech of the elected officials.
