The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife is set to expedite the unveiling of the Nyandarua County Wildlife Compensation Committee.
Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano announced this during a tree planting ceremony at Iriani Primary School, emphasising the need to process claims for residents affected by human-wildlife conflict.
“I will soon unveil the committee so that it can process the claims for payment,” she assured.
In response to appeals from County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa, who highlighted the ongoing conflicts involving local wildlife, particularly hippos and buffaloes, the CS acknowledged the challenges faced by communities coexisting with nature. Jaldesa noted recent incidents, including a buffalo attack that claimed a life.
Additionally, the County Executive for Water, Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, Wachira Mugo, called for the gazetting of Lake Olbolosat as a national reserve.
The move would empower the county to fund conservation efforts and develop the lake into a tourist attraction.
With a commitment of Sh7.5 million from the World Bank for conservation initiatives, the local government is working alongside self-help groups to minimise human-wildlife conflicts, ensuring a safer environment for residents.
