Lugari lawmaker Nabii Nabwera has issued a strong warning to his constituents about a fraudulent scheme involving the sale of forest land.
Speaking at the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Lumakanda grounds, he emphasized that the government has not de-gazetted any forest land in Lugari, and those extorting money by claiming to sell land to squatters are criminals.
Nabwera called on Deputy County Commissioner Simon Mutai to take urgent action to apprehend these fraudsters, stating, “Bwana DCC, I will be coming to your office to make a formal report. There are fraudsters moving around deceiving the public that a section of the forest land is being sold.”
He revealed that some of these scammers are prominent figures in the community, luring innocent individuals to bars and hotels in Kakamega town and demanding up to Sh 100,000, depending on the number of people wanting to be settled.
Nabwera reiterated that the government is not allocating land to squatters and that the Mautuma Central Settlement Scheme is not being expanded. He urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
On security issues, he praised local authorities for maintaining peace in the constituency. Mutai, reading the President’s speech, highlighted the importance of peace and security for development, stating, “Without calmness and security, life is difficult and unbearable.”
Mutai expressed gratitude to Nabwera for recognising the efforts of security agencies in combating illicit liquor and enhancing safety in the area. He also noted that surveillance will be intensified as national examinations approach.
