Political leaders from across the divide yesterday joined EALA MP, Kanini Kega and his family during the burial of his mother, Mama Annah Nyatoro Ndung’u, in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri County.
The emotional ceremony attracted senior politicians allied to both the government and opposition, with many eulogizing the late matriarch as a humble, hardworking and deeply religious woman who played a significant role in shaping the former Kieni MP’s political and personal life.
Among them were former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Democratic Party of Kenya leader, Justin Muturi, and several MPs and MCAs from the Mt Kenya region and beyond.
Dozens of aspiring political leaders and several former MPs and MCAs also attended the ceremony, whose service was led by PCEA clergy.
During the burial, leaders used the occasion to preach unity and political tolerance amid the country’s heightened political temperatures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Rigathi Gachagua described the late Mama Annah as a strong family matriarch who invested heavily in the education and wellbeing of her children and community. He urged leaders to remain united and supportive of one another during difficult moments, saying the loss of a mother was one of the most painful experiences anyone could endure.
The DCP leader took through the mourners how he saved Kega from loosing EALA seat in a plot that was hatched to also deny the mountain region any representative to the regional assembly that is based in Arusha, Tanzania.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna who was warmly welcomed by mourners called for unity among opposition leaders, saying the country needed a strong and united political front ahead of the next election cycle.
He urged leaders to put aside past political differences and work together for the sake of the country.
In an emotional tribute, Kanini Kega recounted his final moments with his mother before travelling abroad, saying her death came as a shock to the family. He described her as the pillar of the family whose guidance and prayers kept the family together.
The burial ceremony was marked by emotional tributes, prayers and calls for leaders to embrace civility and focus on issues affecting ordinary Kenyans rather than divisive politics.
