Mwalimu Jackson Karua is mourned as a teacher whose influence extended well beyond the classroom
By MKT Reporter
A requiem mass for Mwalimu Jackson Karua, father of People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, was held yesterday at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, drawing family, political figures, and mourners to honour a man remembered as a dedicated educator and principled family man.
Mwalimu Jackson, as he was widely known, spent his career in Kenya’s teaching profession at a time when educators occupied a central and deeply respected place in community life. Those who spoke at the service described a man whose commitment to learning shaped not only his children but the broader communities he served — a quiet influence that outlasted any title or position.
Martha Karua, who has built one of Kenya’s most recognisable careers in law and opposition politics, has frequently credited her father’s values as foundational to her own public life. His passing marks the loss of a figure whose significance was felt most by those closest to him, even as his daughter’s prominence brought wider attention to his memory.
He leaves behind a family, a legacy of service, and a cathedral full of people who came to say that a life honestly lived is worth honouring.
