Three counties united to mark a national holiday that challenged every Kenyan to honour the past by building the future

Kenya marked Mashujaa Day yesterday at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, where President William Ruto presided over the 63rd national celebrations in the first joint hosting by Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties.
Thousands arrived before dawn to secure seats in a stadium dressed in national colours. Ruto arrived at approximately 10am aboard a ceremonial military vehicle, waving to the crowds before inspecting a military parade that drew sustained applause. The national and East African anthems were sung, followed by disciplined marching formations, scout and Girl Guide contingents, police bands and an air display by the Kenya Defence Forces.
This year’s celebrations carried the theme Ngao Yetu, Ustawi Michezoni na Uchumi Bora — Security, Sports and Economic Development — a choice that resonated sharply in a region renowned for producing world-class athletes and anchoring Kenya’s agricultural economy. The occasion also recognised citizens whose contributions to sports, entrepreneurship, education, arts, human rights and public service reflect a broadened understanding of heroism — one that extends well beyond the independence struggle.
In the days preceding the main event, thematic activities ran across all three host counties. Exhibitions at Eldoret National Polytechnic drew public engagement on cybersecurity and consumer protection, while inter-county sports competitions brought together young people under a shared banner of unity and peaceful coexistence.
Mashujaa Day is not merely a public holiday. It is an annual reckoning — a moment to measure how faithfully the living are honouring the sacrifices of those who came before them.
The heroes have done their part. The rest is now ours.
