Linda Mwananchi Movement Edwin Sifuna
The Nairobi senator and presidential aspirant says global electoral upsets prove that no outcome in Kenya’s 2027 contest should be dismissed.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna yesterday invoked political upheaval in Serbia and Brazil to argue that Kenya’s 2027 General Election remains genuinely open, dismissing suggestions that an electoral upset against the incumbent is impossible.
Sifuna, who is positioning himself for a presidential run under the Linda Mwananchi Movement, pointed to two developments that have captured global attention. In Serbia, a student-led protest movement that emerged from public fury over a deadly railway station canopy collapse in Novi Sad in November 2024 — which killed 16 people and exposed alleged government corruption — grew into a sustained challenge against President Aleksandar Vučić’s political establishment. In Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won yesterday’s presidential run-off with 51.79 per cent of the vote against conservative challenger Flávio Bolsonaro’s 48.21 per cent, overturning a first-round deficit to secure a decisive victory.
“I don’t know if those who are categorical that there can be no miracles in elections are following the happenings in Serbia and Brazil,” Sifuna said. “I’m super encouraged for 2027 because we in Kenya pray to the same God. Inshallah we get ours too.”
With opposition coalitions still forming and questions over unity unresolved, Sifuna’s message is as much a rallying call to a fragmented opposition as it is a statement of personal ambition. In a political season already defined by realignments and calculation, he is betting that hope, correctly directed, is itself a political force.
Global history suggests he is not wrong.
