As Matiang’i’s party formalises alliance talks, Kenya’s fragmented opposition faces its defining test before August’s election

Jubilee Party yesterday formed an inter-party committee to lead coalition negotiations with opposition formations ahead of the 2027 general election, signalling that Kenya’s fractured opposition is moving — deliberately, if belatedly — towards consolidation.
The committee, approved by Jubilee’s National Executive Committee under party leader Fred Matiang’i on Monday, will be chaired by former Muranga Senator Kembi Gitura, with National Secretary General Moitalel Ole Kenta and Janet Ong’era serving as members. Its immediate mandate is to review the draft Deed of Agreement for the Ukombozi Alliance and explore cooperation with other opposition parties. “The NEC reaffirmed the party’s commitment to constructive dialogue, cooperation and the pursuit of a common agenda for the transformation of our country,” Ole Kenta said.
With August 2027 approaching and President William Ruto’s re-election machinery already in motion, the opposition’s window for building a credible, unified alternative is narrowing fast. Coalition committees are a start — but Kenya’s voters have seen promising opposition arrangements collapse under the weight of personal ambition before. Whether the Ukombozi Alliance holds together long enough to mount a serious challenge will depend less on committee resolutions than on whether its leaders can subordinate individual interests to a shared national purpose.
The clock is running.
