The committee in a sitting yesterday

The National Assembly departmental committee on Defence and Foreign Relations yesterday commenced vetting for nominees to various countries in the positions of Ambassadors, High Commissioners and Permanent representatives.
The Committee chaired by Hon. Richard Tongi, Member of Parliament, Nyaribari Chache has questioned nominees appointed by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta to various missions in the globe.
So far seven Ambassador nominees ; Mr Clement Nzomo Kiteme nominee to Angola, Ms Mary Mugwanja nominee for Austria, Prof. Bitange Ndemo expected to take up Belgium, Ms Muthoni Gichohi who is a nominee to China, Amb. Gathoga Chege who has been nominated for Cuba, Amb. Salim Salim nominated to represent Kenya in Djibouti and Maj. Gen. A.G. Matiiri nominee to the Arab Republic of Egypt have been vetted.
Yesterday’s committee vetting schedule was fully achieved except for Dr. Caroline Wanjiru Karugu nominee for Denmark whose nomination has been withdrawn on grounds that she has been assigned other duties.
The Committee is interrogating nominees on strategies to engage in so as to strengthen economic ties among the countries they are going to represent the nation.
Members also grilled the nominees on matters of their capabilities, track records among other aspects of professionalism as depicted in Chapter six of the Constitution of Kenya to ensure that Kenya is highly represented in the globe by great determined individuals who will endeavor for positive change.
The Honorable Members of the Committee are keen on the opportunities in terms of economic engagement
in regards to Trade, Tourism, Education and other development agendas to be tackled by nominees while serving in those missions for value addition to Kenya.
The Committee is carrying out this activity following receipt of the nominations from H.E. the President on 4th May 2022, the Speaker of the National Assembly, in accordance with the provisions of S.O. 45, forwarded the names and curriculum vitae to the Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations which is mandated to vet and consider the suitability of the nominees for appointment and submit its report to the House for adoption.
The three – day vetting will see the outgoing Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Michael Sialai vetted today among the nominees in his position as High Commissioner nominee to the Republic of Namibia.
The Committee is expected to produce a report on all the nominees and table it in the House for consideration, debate and approval.
