Sarah, a gender based violence activist in Migori county
By Ruth Saing’ieu
It is on a busy Monday that everybody is rushing to specific workplaces and I meet a woman named Sarah, a 32-year-old woman whose life has been defined by the silent struggles of gender-based violence.
Sarah’s journey began like many others in the world, filled with hope and dreams of a brighter future. Yet, behind closed doors, she faced the harrowing reality of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her husband. For years, she suffered in silence, trapped by fear and societal stigma.
Sarah says that she was born healthy without any complications in her body. However, she met a person whom she happened to love and eventually they got married. At first, the man looked innocent and humbled until when they sealed their relationship with a child. Sarah says that she has been abused emotionally, psychologically and mentally by her husband who is working as a director in a certain tea processing plant.
Statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that approximately 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. These statistics, while staggering, barely scratch the surface of the epidemic that plagues communities globally.
For Sarah, breaking free from the cycle of violence was not just an act of courage but a testament to her unwavering strength. With the support of local shelters and advocacy groups, she found the courage to speak out and seek help. However, her journey to healing was not that easy.
“I thought I was alone, that no one would understand,” Sarah says, her voice trembling with emotion. “But reaching out was the best decision I ever made. I realized that I wasn’t alone, that there were others like me, fighting to break free.”
According to UN Women, gender-based violence knows no boundaries, affecting individuals regardless of age, race, or socioeconomic status. It is a pervasive violation of human rights, with devastating consequences for survivors and their communities.
Despite the challenges she faced, Sarah’s resilience shone brightly as she rebuilt her life from the ground up. Today, she works tirelessly as an advocate for survivors of gender-based violence, lending her voice to those who have yet to find theirs.
“I want others to know that they are not alone, that there is hope beyond the darkness,” Sarah asserts, her gaze unwavering. “Together, we can break the cycle of violence and create a world where everyone feels safe and respected.”
As Sarah’s story reminds us, behind every statistic lies a human being with hopes, dreams, and the fundamental right to live free from violence. Through education, advocacy, and support, we can work towards a future where stories like Sarah’s are no longer the norm but a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
