An open letter to the second Deputy President of Kenya, Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua.
Dear your Excellency,
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I want to acknowledge your resilience in promoting unity within the Mt. Kenya region, as we all know that unity is strength, as the saying goes, “ita rîtarî ndundu rîhûûragwo na njûgûma îmwe.” I am glad for your efforts to ensure that the Mt. Kenya community can speak in one voice.
However, there have been concerns raised by the people regarding how you have been endorsing individuals around you, especially the current members of parliament who refer to themselves as “itungati.” Many of these “itungatis” have lost their standing in their respective constituencies and are relying on your influence to remain relevant within the community that supports you in Mt. Kenya.
I urge you to exercise due diligence before endorsing someone to the people. While the community trusts you, it may be inappropriate for you to impose leaders of your choice on them. I recall an incident at Mukurwe-ini church where a concern was raised about giving fair ground to different leaders for the people to choose whom they want. Subsequently, during an interview at Inooro, you still mentioned individuals you would like people to elect. This approach is concerning for democracy.
I encourage you to consider being a political student of President Uhuru Kenyatta for a moment. Remember that Uhuru never endorsed anyone because he wanted the people to elect their preferred leader. He did not endorse Kimani wa Matangi in 2017, despite winning a Jubilee ticket for Kiambu senatorial race; instead, he gave a fair ground to Karungo Thangw’a , who had previously lost and was running as an independent candidate.
The current approach you are taking in Mt. Kenya politics may lead to disillusionment. Even those candidates who may not align with your intended party will still require their support, and endorsing individuals who have lost touch with their constituents is both unforgivable and unfair. I urge you not to endorse anyone but instead provide a fair playing field for all potential leaders.
