Global biodiversity policy post-2020
By Mercy Syombua
Biodiversity plays a key role in securing human wellbeing and a healthy planet but the current state is not good as nature is declining at a rate never witnessed before in the human history. Human production and consumption are pushing it to the brink
Despite the ongoing efforts, the life of plants, animals, fish birds and other creatures is disappearing in our common homes and most especially in Africa. Over time, this has worsened due to uncontrolled urbanization, agricultural development and human activitity. For example, converting forests to plantations as well as wetlands to farmlands, has led to loss of formally biodiversity. Use of chemicals kills the coral reefs, fish and other marine life, which destroys the livelihoods of creatures living in and around oceans and lakes. Such uncontrolled human activities prevent the possibility of living in harmony with nature. Due to this situation, the young people have come out to speak one voice of:
Change of the mindset, behaviors and habits towards living in harmony with nature.
The government to establish political and economic structures that emphasize on appreciating the cultural, religious and social value of biodiversity.
All human developments and activities that affect the vulnerable poor and contribute to biodiversity loss should be terminated.
Balance and appreciation of microorganism (fungi, algae, worms and insects) and their importance in maintaining the balance of life on the planet.
The checks and balances that ensure enforcement measures against failure to achieve biodiversity conservation goals should be reviewed.
Nature friendly that is the adoption and implementations of nature –friendly solutions to deal with biodiversity loss.
My commitments as a young person is to choose a lifestyle that reduces the threats to biodiversity,
Be the change I want to see (I have planted several trees) and creating awareness about conservation of biodiversity in the village where I come from, in school where I learn, in church where I pray and to the friends I associate with. Mercy Syombua, Rongo University Migori.
