Because I Can’t Sleep
O God,
Because I Can’t Sleep
I stay awake at night and compose ragas.
The only one who has troubled me is
The one whose face is always bright
Neither do I have sleep in my eyes nor patience in my mind,
Neither am I respectable nor disrespected.
Thousands of wise men came here and went away.
Once I had thousands of qualities but they went away.
The mind and the heart both keep getting angry with each other.
The moon and the stars keep burning each other.
This estrangement is the reason for the increasing harshness in the universe.
The moon says how long can I hang without the sun?
If I don’t have the diamond of love in me,
Then my existence will be in the market You will fall down one by one like a stone.
Oh love, the world knows you by thousands of names,
It is you who pours the wine of life in every body and vessel
There are thousands of civilizations which you keep alive,
You have no face but still you have thousands of faces
Oh love, it is your job to give faces to all the faces of Turks, Europeans, and the African world
Fill this ocean of mine with your pitcher today
Or let me become something like you.
Now open the lid of your pitcher.
Then see how thousands of leaders bow their heads to the ground,
And how many poets happily describe love.
Then the people with deep addiction will be set free.
And then they will all be resurrected,
And on the day of doom when their deeds will be accounted for.
