The Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) in partnership with Hon. Wangui Ngirici has today launched breastfeeding centres in various schools across five sub-counties of Kirinyaga — Kerugoya, Mwea East, Mwea West, Ndia, and Gichugu.
The initiative aims to provide safe, comfortable, and private spaces within schools where teachers with young children can breastfeed and bond with their infants while at work — promoting both productivity and maternal well-being.
Speaking during the launch, KEWOTA Chief Executive Officer, Benter Opande, applauded Hon. Ngirici for her continued support and shared vision in advancing the welfare of women in the education sector.
“This initiative is about dignity and inclusion for breastfeeding teachers. Hon. Ngirici’s partnership with KEWOTA reflects true understanding of women’s needs in modern workplaces,” said Ms. Opande.
Ms. Opande has been instrumental in steering KEWOTA towards transformative programs that empower women teachers nationwide. Under her leadership, KEWOTA has championed gender-responsive workplace reforms, professional development opportunities, and social support systems for women educators across Kenya.
She further commended Wilikister Muiruri, the KEWOTA Kirinyaga County Coordinator, for her dedication in mobilizing and championing women’s empowerment initiatives at the grassroots level.
Earlier this year, KEWOTA rolled out a similar breastfeeding support project in Ndhiwa Sub-County, Homa Bay, reflecting Ms. Opande’s broader vision to make schools more inclusive and supportive environments for women educators across the country.
“Our goal is to ensure that no teacher has to choose between motherhood and career,” she affirmed.
Through visionary leadership and collaborative partnerships, Benter Opande continues to position KEWOTA as a national leader in advocating for women’s rights, workplace dignity, and educational excellence.
