Central Counties with high consumption of illicit and second generation brews

Devolved units that have recorded the highest consumption of second generation and illicit brews in central region have been exposed.
A forum of stakeholders from the region was told that Kirinyaga, Kiambu and Nyeri counties were leading in intake of illicit alcoholic drinks while Nyandarua had the highest consumption of second generation brews.
Benson Leparmorijo, the Deputy Regional Commissioner in Central region revealed that the presence of illicit and second generation brews varied from county to county as he disclosed the areas where the consumption was rampant.
“We will now be vigilant and proactive as we will not wait for incidences where deaths and hospitalization are reported to happen but gather intelligence and act upon immediately” Leparmorijo said.
He added that law had no emotions and asked everyone from the manufacturers and distributors to oblige with the law.
The forum, held at FK Resort near Nyeri town was attended by National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) led by Leparmorijo, National Police Service, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBs), National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) as well as Alcohol manufacturers and distributors.
The forum was convened to discuss the presence of substandard and illicit brews within the central region.
Acting Central Regional Police Commander Benson Maina said the National Police Service is working closely with other stakeholders as a multiagency team to combat the prepararion and consumption of the illicit brews within the region.
He said that the Police Service is active, was working effectively and has intensified raids on the contrabands dealers.
The police boss noted that they are using a multiagency approach together with KRA and KEBs to make their raids effective so as to save the young generation who were major consumers and who were on the verge of perishing.
On the other hand, he also noted that on the arising case of muggings in the region the police officers were on high alert and have intensified patrols.
