The Confederation of IGAD Employers (CIE), in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), convened for the IGAD region’s Annual General Meeting in Nairobi, The meeting, focused on the worsening political and economic instability in Sudan and its detrimental effects on the Sudanese business sector.
The Confederation of IGAD Employers, representing the voice of employers in the IGAD region have expressed deep concern over the escalating turmoil in Sudan, underscoring the critical role of the private sector in driving economic stability, job creation, and regional integration.
“The ongoing instability has caused severe disruptions to businesses in Sudan, and this will have long-term consequences for the regional economy.” Said CIE President Mr. Bol Andrew
In response to the crisis, the he called for urgent regional and international intervention to safeguard Sudanese businesses and support their resilience, urging the IGAD region and the African Union to initiate diplomatic dialogue with all parties involved in Sudan to foster a stable and business-friendly environment.
“It is essential that we act swiftly to preserve the economic foundation of Sudan and the livelihoods of its people.” Mr. Andrew added.
The Confederation is also advocating for the provision of emergency economic assistance, the negotiation of trade and investment agreements, and targeted support for Sudanese employers. They further appealed to international bodies, including the ILO, the International Organization of Employers (IOE), and Business Africa (BA), to provide both financial and technical assistance to help sustain businesses and protect jobs.
Recognizing the significant challenges faced by employers and workers in Sudan, they called upon development partners to prioritize financial aid and implement targeted funding mechanisms aimed at enhancing the economic resilience of Sudanese businesses.
“We stand in solidarity with the Sudanese business community, and we are committed to working with them to overcome these challenges.” Continued to say Mr. Andrew
Additionally, they emphasized the need for regional employer organizations to collaborate, exchange best practices, and develop resilience strategies that will aid Sudanese businesses in navigating the crisis.
“This is a moment for unity and cooperation across borders to ensure the survival and recovery of Sudan’s private sector.” The CIE President added.
Reaffirming its dedication to fostering a stable business climate in the IGAD region, they underscored the importance of structured social dialogue among governments, employers, and workers, stressing that such dialogue is essential for mitigating economic disruptions and ensuring long-term stability.
Finally, to further address the evolving situation in Sudan, they pledged to engage with IGAD member states, regional social partners, the ILO, and development partners to closely monitor and assess the crisis. They also committed to convening high-level meetings with key stakeholders to explore strategic interventions and sustainable solutions aimed at ensuring business continuity and supporting economic recovery in Sudan.
Marking this step in advocating for a coordinated regional response to Sudan’s crisis, they emphasized the importance of solidarity, collaboration, and swift action in securing the future of businesses in Sudan and across the IGAD region.
