Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) has shrugged off suggestion that Kenya Kwanza Alliance coalition affiliate parties should be dissolved to form a single party.
The party National Chairman Esau Kioni said his party had declined suggestions by Kenya Kwanza leaders to dissolve all parties affiliated and form one strong party.
He said such a move would take the country back democratically.
Adressing journalists in his home in Othaya constituency, Kioni said those behind such schemes wanted to take the country back into the old dark days of single party rule which is uncalled for.
He said that DP is a yester, today and tomorrow party for Kenyans and jokingly added that the party founders who formed it in 1991 who are deceased can curse them if they try to dissolve the party into other parties.
He disclosed that the party constitution states that no one can dissolve the party either as the National chairman, Secretary General or any other official, apart from a meeting convened by a Special National Delegates meeting.
He stated that the DP party has in the past clearly put it publicly that it won’t be dissolved to form any coalition and they are not ready for that, but they are ready to work with any parties of similar ideologies.
He advised Kenya Kwanza leaders to borrow history from a party like Jubilee on how and why it didn’t last long after dissolving all parties to make Jubilee Party.
Kioni said he believes that President William Ruto is a strong believer of democracy and multiparty so the move will be a wrong one.
He also added that after last weekend’s comments by Ruto that he has invited Stephen Kalonzo to work with him, it’s not right for everyone who lost to hop into the government as a country requires a strong government and also a strong opposition to keep the government on its toes to ensure service delivery to the citizens
Democratic Party is the 2nd oldest party in Kenya after KANU party.
The party boosts of having one senator, 1MP and 4 MCA across the central region.
