Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja Kirocho yesterday took over the helms of National Police Service.
He assumed the office following his appointment by President William Ruto and subsequent swearing in a ceremony presides over by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
He replaced Japhet Koome who resigned in July.
Kanja, who previously served as the Commandant of GSU emphasized his readiness to ensure law and order were followed and maintained.
“I am fully prepared to serve this nation and ensure the safety and security of all Kenyans. My focus will be on enhancing the efficiency and professionalism of the police service while maintaining the rule of law,” he stated.
He also expressed his desire to foster stronger relationships between the police and the community, noting that collaboration is essential in ensuring effective policing.
Kanja takes over as IG at a time when the country is grappling with various security threats, including rising crime in urban areas, banditry in northern regions, and concerns over police conduct during protests and public gatherings.
His appointment comes after months of public debate over police reform, with many calling for more transparency and accountability within the service.
Speaking earlier in the day, President Ruto praised Kanja’s extensive experience in the force, highlighting his leadership in handling complex security operations.
“Kanja has demonstrated dedication and competence throughout his career. I have confidence that he will guide the police service in addressing the security challenges our nation faces,” said the President.
As head of the GSU, Kanja oversaw operations in response to terrorism threats, organized crime, and civil unrest. His leadership in these areas is seen as crucial as the government seeks to strengthen its response to security threats across the country.
In his address, Kanja outlined several key priorities, including modernizing the police service through better training, improving the welfare of officers, and ensuring timely responses to security threats. He also pledged to ensure that the police service operates within the framework of human rights, stating, “We will work diligently to ensure that every officer respects the law and upholds the rights of the people we serve.”
Kanja further reiterated his commitment to working closely with other government agencies to ensure coordination in tackling crime and maintaining public safety. “We must remain vigilant and united in our efforts to protect the citizens of this country. The security of our nation is a shared responsibility,” he added.
Kanja’s appointment marks a new chapter for the National Police Service, and his leadership will be crucial in ensuring a stable and secure environment across the country.
