The East Africa Students Union (EASU) has thrown its weight behind the candidacy of Kenya’s former Prime minister Raila Odinga for the Chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC). In a strong show of support, EASU joined other student organizations across the continent, underscoring Odinga’s unmatched leadership qualities and his dedication to the Pan-African agenda.
In a press statement , President of both EASU and the Kenya Universities’ Students Organization (KUSO) Antony Manyara, the union expressed its confidence in Odinga’s ability to lead the African Union (AU) towards a brighter future.
“In Raila Odinga, EASU sees a selfless statesman of high standing, an experienced leader of global repute, and a Pan-African true to the continent’s agenda.” Said Manyara.
The endorsement from EASU comes as students and youth organizations across Africa rally to support Odinga’s bid for the top AU position. EASU has urged all student bodies, youth organizations, and lobby groups on the continent to unite in rallying behind Odinga, believing that his victory would be a significant milestone for Africa as a whole.
Manyara further stated that EASU believes that a decisive victory for Odinga will be a true victory for Africa, emphasizing the importance of collective action in securing this win for the continent. The union’s endorsement is seen as a significant move, potentially galvanizing youth support across Africa for Odinga’s candidacy.
As the campaign for the AUC Chairmanship intensifies, EASU says the backing of Odinga by influential groups, signals growing momentum for him, whose long-standing commitment to Pan-Africanism and development has earned him respect both within and beyond Africa.
