Empowering Kenyans: The Government’s Initiative for Overseas Job Opportunities

By conducting these roadshows, particularly in rural areas, the government is ensuring that Kenyans have access to information about available job opportunities overseas. This is crucial in empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their careers and reducing the risk of exploitation by unscrupulous recruitment agencies.
The government’s collaboration with recruitment agencies to ensure fair practices is a step in the right direction. It demonstrates a commitment to protecting the rights of Kenyan workers and promoting ethical recruitment processes. This measure will help prevent cases of mistreatment and exploitation that have been reported among Kenyan workers in the Middle East and other regions. Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua emphasized the importance of educating Kenyans, particularly in rural areas, about available job prospects abroad and ensuring fair recruitment practices.
Additionally, the government’s plan to ratify international conventions concerning decent work, child trafficking, and labor migration aligns with global labor standards. This move signals Kenya’s dedication to upholding the rights of its citizens working abroad and ensuring that they are treated with dignity and respect. It also strengthens Kenya’s position as a responsible member of the international community. The establishment of a Migrant Workers Welfare Fund and the creation of a maternity benefits policy for women in the informal sector are crucial support mechanisms for Kenyan workers abroad. These initiatives demonstrate the government’s understanding of the unique challenges faced by Kenyan workers, particularly women, and its commitment to providing them with the necessary support and protection.
Moreover, the government has unveiled a substantial number of job opportunities abroad, with 300,000 positions currently available through the National Employment Authority Portal. This initiative aims not only to facilitate employment for Kenyans but also to restore confidence among the youth, who have often dismissed overseas job offers as scams due to past experiences with fraudulent recruitment.
