Over 500,000 people, including over 100,000 flower farm employees, depend on the industry, which has become a significant source of income for households in Manguo village, Nyahururu.
The demand for Kenyan flowers in European markets has led to major export opportunities, influencing flower farming both large-scale and small-scale.
Local farmers, like Margaret, are embracing sustainable practices and generating substantial revenue from the sale of flowers.
The industry has also positively impacted the environment and social fabric of Manguo, using organic farming practices to maintain soil health and reduce chemical runoff.
Floriculture has fostered community cohesion and women’s empowerment, with women’s groups benefiting financially and connecting with other women.
However, challenges such as poor working conditions and market insufficiency pose challenges for small-scale flower farmers.
The government need to focus on the responsible and safe production of cut flowers by considering workers’ welfare and environmental protection.
