Representatives of various former freedom fighters groups are set to meet today over plans to attend the forthcoming Jamhuri day celebrations.
The veterans led by Mzee Gikonyo Wa Githiga who is the National coordinator of Mau Mau War Veterans Association will today be meeting at Scouting movement’s Baden Powell grounds in Nyeri town.
Sources said the representatives are expected to come out with a petition on among other things, their long standing compensation.
Last week, the veterans and some of their descendants held a meeting in Kiambu where they called upon their colleagues to come out and register with a caucus that is promising huge compensation for atrocities meted against their relatives.
The initiative is being coordinated by an Non-Governmental Organisation; Jeremiah Mugi Foundation and another group of former freedom fighters.
The two groups organised a prayer and thanks giving event at AIC Kirenga Church in Lari constituency, Kiambu County.
Hundreds of both groups members jammed the church where Bishop Geoffrey Gichure led the sermon.
The foundation was represented by among others, its National chairman James Njuguna Mahuria while Mzee Githiga and Bishop Fundi Mwai led the association team.
The members of the foundation, the Veterans Association, Post colonial Elites and Matigari Welfare Association which was led by Bishop David Kiarie had a procession from the church to Wida Motel in Zambezi area, along Nairobi-Nakuru highway where elders from Baringo, Makueni and Meru counties received their Mau Mau Registers which will be used in crosscheking compensation details.
Those present were also sensitized on various issues affecting the descendants of former freedom fighters.
The organizers urged those interested to join them to register at the National Archives on the second floor offices along Moi Avenue in Nairobi.
