Ms Alicen Chelaite

Former Rongai Member of Parliament, Alicen Chelaite, has raised concerns over her safety, alleging threats from individuals involved in an ongoing property ownership dispute currently before a Nakuru court.
Through her lawyer, Biko Osur, Chelaite has petitioned for the cancellation of the bond granted to one of the suspects, Edwin Ronoh, a police officer, citing threats to her safety and peace.
Ronoh, alongside two co-accused—Eva Jelangat and Jacob Kiprotich—faces a total of 11 charges, including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining registration by false pretenses, forgery, and providing false information to a public officer. The prosecution alleges that the trio conspired to forge birth registration documents in an attempt to defraud Chelaite, who is elderly and ailing.
According to court documents, the accused allegedly presented falsified birth certificates to the Nakuru Law Courts on or about November 27, 2023. These documents, purportedly issued by the Department of Civil Registration Services, are said to have been fraudulently obtained.
“Having raised them up, having fed them, having supported them, it would be gross to assume that this should go lying and undefended………..Because of this fraud, Cheleita is now under the mercy of friends and former parliamentarians for her upkeep and medical expenses,” Osul stated.
The trio is further accused of initiating legal proceedings against Chelaite using forged documents, despite being aware that the signatures on the documents were falsified. Advocate Matano, whose name was linked to the case, has denied filing any lawsuit, particularly ELC No. 329 of 2023.
In a separate charge, Jelangat is accused of fraudulently procuring a birth certificate by falsely claiming Chelaite as her mother. Similarly, Ronoh is charged with knowingly obtaining a birth certificate under the pretense that Chelaite was his mother and Elijah Kiplagat Kipkemoi Chelaite his father, despite his biological parents—who are still alive—having no familial ties to the Chelaite family. This alleged offense reportedly occurred on June 2, 2010, in Nakuru township.
On November 4, last year, the three defendants appeared before Nakuru Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng, where they pleaded not guilty to all charges. They were each released on a bond of KSh 200,000, with a surety of a similar amount.
However, yesterday, Chelaite expressed fears that the continued release of the accused on bond jeopardizes her safety and the integrity of the judicial process. She is now seeking the immediate revocation of the bond, particularly for Ronoh, whom she accuses of actively undermining her safety by trespassing her farm, destroying property and barring cultivating and other operations.
“Having been raised in this house, he’s now abusing the trust and the investment our client injected in him when he was growing up. And that’s what we’re also feeling a bit agitated about,” vowed Osul.
The case is set to come up in court next week for further directions, with a focus on the bond terms for Ronoh, who is accused of tampering with Chelaite’s safety and peace at home.
