In a significant boost to the region’s agricultural sector, the Tharaka Nithi County Government, in collaboration with the National Government, is constructing a state-of-the-art Livestock Sale Yard in Kathwana municipality.
The project, which is being funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), is aimed at transforming local farming communities by enhancing agricultural productivity and promoting value addition for livestock.
The construction of the modern facility is being implemented under the Small-Scale Irrigation and Value Addition Programme.
This initiative is designed to bolster rural incomes by improving small-scale irrigation systems and simultaneously introducing strategies to add value to agricultural products through processing, packaging, and more efficient marketing.
The Livestock Sale Yard is expected to serve as a key commercial hub for livestock keepers and traders in Tharaka Nithi County and beyond, addressing the need for better infrastructure in the region.
The facility will not only provide a dedicated space for livestock trading but will also feature essential amenities such as sanitation facilities, hotels, and shops, making it a convenient and dignified space for traders and buyers alike.
Residents, particularly livestock keepers and traders, have expressed their enthusiasm about the development, highlighting its positive impact on their livelihoods.
“This project is a game-changer for us,” said Mr. Jacob Mutegi, a livestock trader from Chiakariga. “With this modern facility, we now have access to many services, including sanitation, a hotel, and shops. Given the distance from the town center, this will make a huge difference in our daily operations and business.”
The ongoing project clearly shows the working unity declared by government officials, including Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki and Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki during a recent visit to the Deputy President’s official residence in Karen, Nairobi.
The leaders reiterated their commitment to working together to foster development in the county and even across the country.
“We are committed to ensuring that both levels of government work seamlessly to bring development to our people,” Prof. Kindiki said, emphasizing that the government will complete all stalled projects and launch new ones to promote the economic prospects of rural communities.
The project aligns with the county’s broader vision of empowering farmers and improving infrastructure.
As the project progresses, it is expected to create numerous job opportunities, improve the livelihoods of local farmers, and further enhance Tharaka Nithi’s position as a key player in Kenya’s agricultural sector.
