Nairobi you chose well, Sakaja says as he holds MCA caucus
By: Joseph Mutua Ndonga
In 2022, I was aspiring to become the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Githurai Ward. I lost.
If I won, I would have kept my promise of avoiding developing insatiable appetite for raiding county public coffers.
Instead, I would have strived to ensure a huge chunk of revenues is spent for the good of Nairobians.
Some voters would not agree with me.
Ndonga, if we elect you, it will be hard for you to overcome the temptations of your colleagues to join them on the eating table.
Some voters would refer me to the book authored by anti-corruption czar John Githongo titled “It Is Our Time To Eat”.
Githongo had been appointed by President Mwai Kibaki to serve as a Permanent Secretary (PS) in-charge of advising him on how to win the war against mega corruption.
Githongo’s office was located at State House Nairobi.
He wrote the book after falling out with members of Kibaki’s inner circles and flees into exile.
While campaigning in Githurai, this used to be my response and I still maintain my position.
People are different. We have the performers who believe in servant leadership.
We have the greedy lot who believe in using influence you have given them to loot and amass for themselves.
For me, I belong to the group of performers. I would also take them down the memory lane.
Here in Githurai, you had elected a councilor who did it very well. This is in terms of articulating your issues and developing this area. He used to be called Kinoti and even today you remember him.
The position of the MCA was created by the new constitution of 2010 to replace that of councilor.
It is however worth to note that the change of name did not help the matter.
Today, the MCAs are behaving just like the councilors and some are even worse.
Apart from picking wars with their respective governors who fail to oil their palms, there is nothing substantial they have been doing.
This morning, the MCAs launched a campaign of pushing for increment of their salaries.
One of the key highlights of the list of their demands is an increase of a monthly salary to Sh500,000 for each.
The two levels of the government have a constitutional duty to protect the public coffers and ensure the revenues collected are spent prudently to improve the living standards of Kenyan people.
As such, they should not let the MCAs have their way.
