Trans Nzoia County governor George Natembeya has opposed the proposals in the Finance Bill 2024 by the Kenya Kwanza government.
According to Natembeya, the bill poses a threat to businesses across the country. He said the new tax policies have created a hostile environment for investors who have moved to neighbouring countries.
“As the taxes continue to rise, companies have moved to Tanzania, Rwanda and other countries. The tax is not only a threat to common mwananchi, but has also destroyed the economy,” he said.
The contentious Bill made through to the second reading stage after 204 who voted for it, against 115, who voted against the Bill on Thursday, June 20. The second reading is set for June, Tuesday 25.
Following the proposals in the Finance Bill 2024, Kenyans have across the country have been on the street protesting against the Bill calling for rejection, as the Bill is punitive and burdens common mwananchi.
Under the hashtag #RejectFinanceBill2024, they rallied fellow youths to call out MPs who failed to listen to them, sharing their personal phone numbers on X.
Natembeya urged leaders to listen to their electorates, and constant have a one on one meet ups with them, to directly discuss issues affecting them.
According to Natembeya the biggest challenge is unemployment as the demonstrating youths have been adversely affected by Finance Bill, after companies laid down employees following new tax policies.
“The biggest challenge is unemployment. These youths are educated, after a painful struggle of their parents to provide them education. It saddens them that after struggle, the are still at home unemployed. This must be sought out,” Natembeya urged.
Before tabling of the Bill, Budget and Finance Committee chair Kimani Kuria while at State House announced removal of taxes on bread, mobile money transfer and the motor vehicle tax earlier proposed in the Bill.
President William Ruto said the government had listen to the people’s concern, and urged the Members of the National Assembly to pass the Bill, to allow resources reach common mwananchi.
