Tharaka Nithi County leaders led by Governor Muthomi Njuki have asked President William Ruto to consider Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki for the Deputy President position if Rigathi Gachagua is impeached.
Speaking during issuance of free certified seeds to farmers in Kajuki, Chuka/Igambang’ombe Constituency, the leaders said Dr Ruto had planned to pick Prof Kindiki as his running mate in 2022 but Mr Gachagua blackmailed him claiming that if the CS is picked, Mt Kenya Central people would vote Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga because of his running mate, Martha Karua.
Governor Njuki said there are rumours that the security of some leaders have been enhanced signalling that they may be considered for the position because it is clear that Gachagua has to go home.
He said Prof Kindiki enjoys overwhelming support in Mt Kenya West and and that few leaders should not claim that by picking the CS President would loose popularity in the mountain.
‘The deputy president position belonged to Prof Kindiki and if Gachagua is impeached he should take over,” said Njuki.
He said during elections, the entire Mt Kenya region voted as a bloc and it is surprising to hear some leaders from the west claim that Prof Kindiki should not be considered because he comes from east.
He stated that if Prof Kindiki is not considered, Mt East which is made up of Tharaka-Nithi, Meru and Embu counties with think otherwise on the voting pattern.
“If Mt Kenya West betrays us this time, we will cut ties and join Ukambani which is led Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka,” he said.
He also said though the Opposition led by Odinga joined government, it is not right to take the Deputy President position in the lake region.
Tharaka-Nithi County Assembly Speaker John Mbabu and the county’s Administration executive, Muthini Karangi said Prof Kindiki has performed excellently in his duty winning the hearts of many Kenyans.
Karangi said all research firms have ranked the CS as the top performer and if he replaces Gachagua, Kenyans will regain confidence with Ruto’s government.
