The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation is collaboration with international organizations in seeking support for various projects across the country.

Under the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) methodology, the ministry is spearheading more than 34 projects mainly on water harvesting, storage, and distribution for irrigation and multipurpose use.

Further, under the same procedure, the government is also involved in PPP on food security such as Galana Kulalu Food Security Project.

The Ministry has sought technical assistance from the World Bank to explore Public Private Partnership (PPP) in the water and irrigation space that culminated with consultations that were held yesterday at Maji House, Nairobi.

The discussion, chaired by Principal Secretaries, Ephantus Kimotho (Irrigation) and Julius Korir (Water and Sanitation) centred on the diagnosis of the challenges and opportunities for PPPs, development of a pipeline of priority PPP projects, and stakeholders engagement.

The diagnostic assessment being undertaken by KPMG with support from World Bank will aid a number of issues on financing irrigation and water projects relating to sustainability link bond, blended financing, unlocking other private capital for public goods and tapping into climate financing.

This remarkable  opportunity presents a platform for harnessing  a collective expertise and resources, propelling the Ministry towards a more resilient and sustainable future.

Kimotho said that he was hopeful that the projects will address  potential in the water sector where bridging the gap in concessionary financing will be highlighted, opportunities in fine-tuning blended financing and looking into both policy and technical capacity in setting up a de-risking fund to open up potential of investment in the irrigation projects.

On the other hand, Korir echored on the timely collaboration that will ultimately deliver on the government’s Bottom up Economic Transformation Agenda (BeTA) and ensure direct impact on Kenyas economy through irrigated agriculture, water services and climate financing.

The meeting was attended by the Ministry’s top leadership,  KPMG team led by  James Woodward and the World Bank team led by Sam Banya
