The government plans to construct 100 megadams and 1,000 small water reservoirs to harvest storm waters.
Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Zachariah Mwangi Njeru announced that seven of the dams will be built in the Central region to cushion the area against water scarcity during the dry season.
The government is partnering with donors and international lenders to help fund the ambitious programme, which has been sanctioned by the Cabinet.

Several local leaders led by Governor Mutahi Kahiga, his deputy David Kinaniri, Senator Wahome Wamatinga and MPs John Kaguchia ( Mukurweini), Wambugu Wainaina (Othaya) and Njoroge Wainaina (Kieni) also accompanied and held talks on improvement of water and sanitation services in their areas.
