The government of Kenya is restructuring the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the National Social Health Insurance Fund (NSHIF) to ensure that Kenyans can access quality and affordable healthcare, as envisaged in the Kenya Kwanza manifesto of achieving universal health coverage for all.
Yesterday, Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr. Nakhumicha S. Wafula received a courtesy call from the leadership of the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) and the management of the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) where they deliberated on various strategies that should be embraced to make the initiative a reality.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the ongoing restructuring of NHIF to the National Social Health Insurance Fund (NSHIF) and how it will benefit Kenyans in accessing quality and affordable healthcare, as envisaged in the Kenya Kwanza manifesto of achieving universal health coverage.
During the meeting, FKE CEO Jacqueline Mugo, NHIF chairperson Eng. Michael Kamau, and CEO Peter Kamunyo outlined the plans and strategies for restructuring NHIF to NSHIF, which will include expanding the number of services covered and the network of healthcare providers, as well as increasing the efficiency and transparency of the fund.
The FKE leadership expressed their support for the government’s efforts to provide universal health coverage for all Kenyans, and emphasized the importance of private sector involvement in the process.
They also suggested measures to ensure that employers and employees are adequately represented in the new NSHIF governance structure.
The NHIF chairperson and CEO pledged to work closely with the government to ensure the successful implementation of the restructuring process.
They also highlighted the importance of public education and awareness-raising campaigns to ensure that Kenyans understand the benefits of the new NSHIF.
In her remarks, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Nakhumicha S. Wafula thanked the FKE leadership and NHIF management for their commitment to improving the country’s healthcare system.
She emphasized the government’s determination to achieve universal health coverage, which is a key priority in the new government agenda, and reiterated the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in achieving this goal.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from all parties to continue working together towards the successful implementation of the NSHIF restructuring process, which is expected to bring significant improvements to Kenya’s healthcare system.
