Climate change across East Africa leading to lack of rains in these region has led to crop failures, drought and widespread of food shortages.
With government waiver on the ban of genetically modified food crops and animal feeds, that was imposed on 8, Nov 2012 by then former minister of health Beth Mugo, is a clear indication of successful effort that will ensure that the hunger in the country is addressed because of benefits realized by using genetically modified crops.
Due to decrease in maize production in the country Kenyans so far are being forced to dig deep into their pockets in order to buy maize flour with 2kg of maize so far costs 200 shillings.
Scientists urging that GMO maize variety yields a double of what farmers are getting from the conventional breeds given that they are drought tolerant and can withstand pests and diseases is a game changer to food insecurity in the country.
The natures of these crops will even also farmers in the regions that are not receiving little rains to practice farming without fear of decrease in amount of rains.
Economically, farmers who will be using these types of seeds are also guaranteed on increase of their savings since lots of money that were being used to buy agro-chemical products to protect crops against pests will also reduce and these money be invested on some other areas .
Its high time ministry of agriculture should ensure that there is a proper sensitization on the use of GMO to farmers for to put the use of this system into practice for to better the agricultural sector in the country that will result to increase in yield across the country hence addressing the hunger that has claimed lots of lives.
Farmers should also welcome and make good use of these types of crops for the better of the country to address hunger.
