Money is the greatest challenge facing most university students in Kenya today. University students have found themselves in a cage of suffering to sustain themselves in school. Universities have been in session since January, and there are many complaints all over; some students complain that Higher Education Loan Board [HELB] has delayed disbursing their semester loans.
The significant role of [HELB] is to provide affordable loans, bursaries and scholarships to Kenyan students pursuing higher education. Most students depend on these loans for paying school fees, rent and food. Parents and families are often mentioned as the primary source of their children’s upkeep. This is not the case for all students; significant percentages rely on loans.
The number of students feeling financial stress is sticking. According to a new survey, seven out of ten university students feel stressed about their finances.
As a result, some end up dropping out of school and never coming back. Others defer their studies in search of jobs to pay for their fees and rent. It is a call upon all university students to be patient and that parents or guardians should support their children where possible.
The government should also try and provide enough funds to support students.
