National Assembly Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities chaired by Yusuf Hassan Hajj yesterday met with the Director General, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) over employment diversity and 30 per cent procurement reservation to special interest groups.
While making his submissions, Director General, Mamo Boru Mamo said the composition in terms of ethnicity, age, and gender at NEMA has a total of 413 employees with 270 males and 143 females.
Regarding ethnic composition, he disclosed that the institution has a representation of 22 out of 46 ethnic communities in the country.
Documents tabled before the committee revealed that in compliance with Article 54 (2) the composition of persons with disability at the government agrncy standa at only seven employees who constitute 1.7 per cent out of five per cent required by the Constitution.
In response to members’ questions regarding measures to ensure compliance, the Director General assured the committee members that efforts are being made by the institution to enhance compliance that include in all job advertisement female, PWDs and Marginalized candidates are encouraged to apply. All job advertisements will be placed in newspapers and the Authority’s website for wider circulation.
He observed that they will further use affirmative action in recruitment and selection to achieve diversity and use other government offices and agencies to circulate adverts for wider reach.
The members acknowledged the commendable presentation by the Director General saying the report on diversity and gender was factual with analytical data that members can easily digest.
