Kajiado County government yesterday condemned the attack that occurred at the Kitengela Sub-county Hospital during Saba Saba demonstrations on in Kitengela town.
In a pressstatement, Kajiado County Executive Committee Member for Medical Services and Public Health, Alex Kilowua, stated that a group of individuals who had brought in an injured person to the facility, turned unruly, intimidating medical personnel and disrupting the provision of emergency services at the Hospital.
He revealed that the goons caused unnecessary panic, interfered with operations, and endangered the safety and dignity of patients and that of the facility’s frontline health workers.
While confirming that no hospital staff or patients were physically harmed during the incident, Kilowua remarked that targeting of a healthcare institution is unacceptable, as it undermines public trust and access to critical medical care.
“Any act that threatens the safety of our frontline workers or undermines essential medical care is not only irresponsible, but also indefensible. Such actions have no place in our society,” read part of the statement.
He commended the medical staff at the Hospital for their professionalism and composure under duress and remarked that they have taken immediate steps to reinforce hospital security and to provide psychosocial support to the staff affected.
The CECM called on security agencies to investigate thoroughly, identify those involved, and ensure accountability under the rule law, adding that protecting healthcare facilities is essential to maintaining public safety and confidence.
He affirmed that the county remains committed to delivering quality, accessible health services and that efforts were underway to assess the damage and ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
“Acts of vandalism will not deter us from our responsibility to serve,” he said, while urging all leaders, community members, and partners, to stand together in rejecting such behaviour and uphold peace, safety, and respect for life across Kajiado County.
Area Member of Parliament, Kakuta Maimai, has also condemned the violent attacks at the hospital, saying that hospitals are sanctuaries of healing and must never be turned into battlegrounds.
While commending the police for their swift action in managing the situation, he called for calm, restraint, and respect for institutions that serve the most vulnerable in our society and urged protesters, to stop the wanton destruction of people’s properties.
Kitengela town was rocked by deadly demonstrations with protestors engaging the police all day in cat and mouse game, leaving several people injured long, however, normal services have since resumed.
According to hospital sources, a body of one Brian Kimutai, 21, who was shot dead, was brought to the hospital.
