The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has demonstrated commitment in ensuring that regulations are adhered to when it comes to food safety.
The Acting Managing Director of KEBS, Esther Ngari spoke in the sidelines of the ongoing World Food Safety Summit in Nairobi noted that that the conference on food safety is a commemoration that will take the next three days, the highlight being the food safety day which is celebrated on 7th June every year.
“This year’s theme being “Food Standards Saves Lives” is very significant for Kenya Bureau of Standards, being the body mandated to develop standards in Kenya. It’s a day where we discuss about food safety standards, and their impact in trade, both at the National Government and across the borders.
KEBS is the Codex contact point for Kenya and actively participants in Codex work. We participate in every conversation as regards to food safety. There is a national codex committee that coordinates all activities of food safety in our country. We participate at the East Africa Codex forum as well as CCAFRICA.
When food is not safe, then it’s not food. Our role as regulators is to protect the consumer and ensure that all the food they access is safe. Each regulator need to play their role in the entire food chain to protect the consumer. Unsafe food exposes the consumer to food borne illnesses and statistics have it that one in ten people fall sick each year from food borne illnesses. It’s our role as regulators and business operators to protect every consumer. Every player in the entire chain from farm to fork should ensure that all the stakeholders play their role to make sure that the food we are producing or preparing or handling is safe.”
