Kenya has officially flagged off its Special Olympics National Football Team ahead of their participation in the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. The send-off ceremony was held at the Ministry of Sports headquarters
Speaking during the event, Principal Secretary for Sports, Peter Tum, commended the team for their dedication and resilience, expressing confidence that they would represent Kenya with pride on the global stage. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting athletes with intellectual disabilities, emphasizing the importance of inclusion in sports.
“This team embodies the true spirit of determination, discipline, and teamwork. As they head to Turin, we are confident they will showcase Kenya’s talent and competitive spirit. The government remains committed to empowering all athletes, ensuring they have the necessary resources to excel,” he stated.
He also affirmed t government’s commitment to support athletes with disabilities in nurturing talent, announcing that the Ministry has allocated resources to support them.
“We take immense pride in this team and reaffirm the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting inclusive sports. The Ministry has allocated 30% of its resources to support athletes with disabilities, ensuring they get top training, facilities & welfare. Kenya has a strong history in the Special Olympics, and this team is determined to continue that tradition,” announced PS Tum.
The Special Olympics Kenya National Football Team, comprised of players with intellectual disabilities, has been training rigorously in preparation for the global tournament. Their qualification for the World Winter Games is a testament to their hard work and the continuous efforts of Special Olympics Kenya in promoting inclusive sports.
The 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games, set to take place in Turin, Italy, will bring together thousands of athletes from across the world, competing in various winter sports. Though primarily a winter games event, the tournament also features disciplines such as football, allowing teams from non-winter sports nations like Kenya to participate and shine.
The Kenyan team is now set to embark on their journey, aiming to bring home glory and inspire future generations of Special Olympics athletes in the country.
