The Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebbeca Miano, has affirmed that the country’s tourism sector is on an undeniable upward trajectory based on the surge of local and international tourists.
Speaking at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa during the national celebrations of the United Nations World Tourism Day, CS Miano stated that the tourism sector is experiencing remarkable growth, with a new record of 2.4 million international arrivals in 2024, marking a 15 per cent increase from the previous year.
The United States retained the top source market, contributing 12.8 per cent of total arrivals (306,501 visitors), followed by Uganda (9.4 per cent) and Tanzania (8.4 per cent).
Inbound tourism revenue grew significantly, rising from Sh377.49 billion in 2023 to Sh452.20 billion in 2024, a 19.8 percent increase. Domestic tourism also expanded, with bed-night occupancy climbing 12 per cent to 5.17 million in 2024, up from 4.6 million the previous year.
The CS was accompanied by among others, Principal Secretaries for Tourism John Ololtuaa and his Cooperatives counterpart Patrick Kilemi.
The host county leadership was led by Governor Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir with several of his top officials.

Following the recent introduction of a rule, allowing senior citizens to be visiting Kenya’s key tourism attraction centers; National park, sanctuaries among others, a caucus that champions for their interests, more so those who fought for the liberation of the country was also represented.
The caucus that also seeks for the compensation of the former freedom fighters and their descendants; Mau Mau War Veterans Association and affiliate Mau Mau Children Post-Colonial Elites were represented by a group led by the Patron, Bishop Jane Mumbi.
Bishop Mumbi commended the introduction of free parks entry for the senior citizens saying her group was also optimistic that those who lived in the forests for years, fighting for independence would also be compensated soon.
Thousands of Kenyans graced the event that was fulfilled.
