It is humbling to see young souls penning down their own hatched up poetry pieces. This is the culture we the adults want to inculcate in all the youngsters. We want them to appreciate literature at a very young age because soon they are going to be its custodians. This is exactly what Faith is doing. She has participated together with me in the Sustainable Solutions anthology proving that the young lady is on the right path to success. As such, parents should promote their children’s talent. Given they do so, we all will marvel at the wonders that these little souls will bring to light.

Please tell us your name and how your journey started in poetry?

My name is Faith Nyaboke daughter of Mr Amos Mkubwa and Askah Kerubo. I’m 10 years old a grade 4 pupil at Kea DEB primary boarding school in Ekerenyo, North Mugirango, Nyamira county Kenya. I found myself in poetry through the inspiration I got from my dad. My dad is a prolific writer and poet. I started liking his poems when he was writing them down and he would instruct me to read them aloud for him to check on the style, theme and rhyme scheme of the poems. Most of his poems were about nature which made me feel like I was the one who had written them. After my graduation to grade 4 (that is the first term of 2023), he introduced me to writing poetry. He would give me a theme and topic and I had to write a poem about it. After I wrote my poem, he would read it carefully and do the necessary editing. He introduced me to various poetry groups where we would submit to various anthologies.

Have you won any major accolades?

I have not won any accolades yet because l am merely one year old into the poetry game. However I have co-authored several anthologies like “Arise” _ Blue star publication, “United Against climate change” amongst others. I am not a published poet but hope to jump into publishing my 1st anthology of poems early 2024, though l am currently working towards compiling an anthology project on climate change.

Who is your inspiration?

Faith Nyaboke

I get my inspiration from God who gave me this greatest talent. Writing is the best. My intelligence is giving because reading is the source of that intelligence. Secondly my parents bring me a reality of inspiration. My dad is an unbeatable living and loving inspiration. May God bless them abundantly. My teachers are also a big inspiration and may they be blessed. Lastly the one and only woman I look up to as my inspiration and mentor is one late Micere Githae Mugo.

Where do you see yourself in the near future?

Well, I guess in the near future I wish to be a great name in the books of history. I yearn to leave a permanent mark of great Poetry from a great young poet. I am yearning for that day I will win an Oscar award on activism against CLIMATE CHANGE, GBV AND CHILD RIGHTS.

As a matter of fact, my mentor and I have a long term project of publishing as many anthologies as our God will keep us against climate change {Let me breathe Poetry series 2023-2027}.

What problems have you faced as a poet?

Everything has got its problems and challenges and Poetry is not an exception. The main challenge for us poets in Kenya is that Poetry is not recognized as a talent. We appeal to the Government and other stakeholders to support Poetry as a talent.

Any word of advice to other individuals who would want to venture into poetry

My word to aspiring young poets, poetry is a talent that is unexploited mostly in Africa. Countries like Nigeria value poetry and Art. If the whole of Africa embrace Poetry, then our grandchildren will have a great history about the world today. Let’s respect our culture and fight against climate change.
