Marmanet Forest Evictees Visit Laikipia Governor Over Delayed Settlement

Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu yesterday hosted a team from the 1988 Marmanet Forest Evictees Association (MAFEA) in his Nanyuki office.
The group had sought Governor’s intervention in a prolonged land dispute that has left them homeless for over 35 years now.
The families, which currently have around 10,000 members, were evicted from their land in the Marmanet Forest to allow the planting of indigenous trees.
This land would later be allocated to other people, leaving the MAFEA families homeless.
MAFEA had petitioned the Senate in 2020 to help them resolve the land tussle where the Senate adopted their petition as a historical injustice case.
The Senate directed the National Land Commission to form a multiagency team to look into the matter.
To follow on the Senate’s directive, the Governor has directed a committee that includes the Department of Lands to be formed in a bid to properly understand the gravity the issue.
The committee will follow up on the Senate’s directive and revert back with a progress report by June, 2023.
Governor was joined by the County Secretary Koinange Wahome, the Infrastructure, Lands, Public Works and Urban Development CECM Ekwam Nabos, and the Chief Officer for Housing Ken Kibaara, among other county officials.
