The Mau Mau War Veterans and Associates have finalised plans to convene their Annual General Meeting (AGM), including elections and discussions on compensation for veterans and their families, during a week-long gathering set for Friday at the Kakamega Golf Club. Thousands of members, stakeholders, and observers are expected to attend the historic event.
James Mahuria Njuguna, Director of MMV Associates CLG, confirmed that preparations are complete and urged all members to attend in large numbers.
“This meeting will provide a critical platform for veterans and their associates to deliberate on issues affecting their welfare while reinforcing efforts to preserve the historical legacy of the Mau Mau struggle,” Mahuria said.
The gathering will focus on member registration, internal leadership elections, and long-standing discussions on compensation—a central issue for veterans and their families. Representatives and coordinators from counties including Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga, Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Nyandarua, and Nairobi are expected to participate, reflecting the organization’s widespread networks.
The meeting is guided by Executive Order No. 1 of 2023, the Public Benefit Organizations Act No. 18 of 2013, and the National Administration Villages Policy, alongside historical administrative links with the Kenya National Archives and Documentation Service, National Museums of Kenya, and the NGO Coordination Board. These frameworks ensure that the association operates within Kenya’s legal and governance standards for public benefit organizations.
The contemporary Mau Mau veterans’ organization was formally inaugurated on December 30, 2003, by former President Mwai Kibaki, a landmark moment in the recognition of freedom fighters who had faced marginalization post-independence. Since September 13, 2022, President William Ruto serves as Patron No. 1 of the association, with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as Patron No. 2, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi as Patron No. 3, and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as Patron No. 4.
International observers, members of the media, regulatory authorities, and other public benefit organizations have been invited to attend to ensure transparency and credibility during the elections and deliberations.
The Mau Mau movement, which emerged as a resistance against colonial rule in the 1950s, remains a defining chapter in Kenya’s path to independence. Decades later, veterans and their descendants continue to advocate for recognition, justice, and the preservation of their history. The Kakamega AGM is expected to unite veterans, historians, policymakers, and descendants of freedom fighters in a concerted effort to safeguard the legacy of one of Kenya’s most significant liberation movements.
