The National Construction Authority (NCA) has officially launched sensitisation programs for the National Building Code 2024, marking a significant milestone in modernizing Kenya’s construction industry. Published as Legal Notice No. 47 on March 1, 2024, the updated code replaces the 1968 Local Government (Adoptive By-Laws) Order, setting contemporary standards for building design, construction, and maintenance.

The launch event, held on Tuesday, underscored the importance of the revised framework in ensuring quality, safety, health, and sustainability within the built environment. Speaking at the event, NCA’s Executive Director, Eng. Maurice Akech, MBS, highlighted the code’s alignment with international best practices, which aim to elevate Kenya’s construction industry to global standards.

Eng. Akech described the new code as a transformative guide to action. “The National Building Code 2024 embodies our commitment to fostering a safe, sustainable, and innovative construction sector. It provides a clear roadmap for achieving excellence in every project undertaken in Kenya,” he said.

The National Building Code 2024 introduces a range of progressive measures designed to enhance the quality and safety of construction projects while promoting sustainability.

To ensure effective adoption, the NCA has initiated nationwide sensitisation programs aimed at engaging industry stakeholders, including engineers, architects, contractors, and policymakers. The sensitisation efforts will focus on building awareness and ensuring compliance with the revised code.

Eng. Akech emphasized the importance of collaboration in making the code a practical tool for the industry. “This code will only succeed if we work together as an industry. It must become a living guide, not a static document,” he said.

The launch of the sensitisation programs is a call to action for all industry stakeholders. The NCA has urged professionals to align with the new code and contribute to its successful implementation. By doing so, the authority aims to create a construction sector that meets global standards while addressing the diverse needs of Kenya’s population.

The National Building Code 2024 is expected to revolutionize the construction industry by fostering a culture of quality, innovation, and sustainability. As Kenya’s urban landscape continues to evolve, the new framework provides a vital foundation for safe and resilient development.

The NCA’s sensitisation programs will be rolled out in various regions in the coming months, ensuring stakeholders have the necessary resources and knowledge to adopt the revised code effectively.
