The CEO of Health X Africa, Roy Bore, has emphasised the importance of inclusive and affordable healthcare for people with disabilities in Kenya. According to the 2019 census, 2.2 per cent of Kenyans live with disabilities, but 80 per cent lack access to quality primary healthcare services. Bore believes telemedicine is the key to unlocking healthcare access for all, regardless of their abilities. Health X Africa offers a wide range of services, including medical consultation, mental health counselling, and nutrition services, available 24/7 through toll-free calls.

Medical Services Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai

Medical Services Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai has urged Kenyans to take responsibility for their mental well-being and mobilise those with disorders for assistance. He called for renewed efforts in the implementation of the World Health Organisation’s Quality Rights initiative to reorient mental health services and adopt a human-rights-based approach. The Quality Rights initiative will bring a paradigm shift to embrace human rights and fundamental freedoms as a precondition of care, address social justice, and reduce stigma and discrimination towards people with mental health issues. In Kenya, mental illnesses are a significant cause of morbidity, with an estimated 25% of outpatients and up to 40% of inpatients suffering from mental conditions. The pervasive culture of denial, silence, and stigma surrounding mental health has hindered many from seeking timely care and achieving their full potential. The Ministry of Health is implementing Universal Health Coverage as a key pillar of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda, with mental health being integral to the attainment of this agenda.
