A climate changes sensitive Non-Governmental Organisation will on-board more than 25,000 farmers on agroforestry, a sustainable farming initiative to transform lives in seven counties by the year 2026. Solidaridad Network Project Manager Betty Musendi said the project entered Kenya two years ago in of counties of Trans-zoia, Bungoma, Kericho and Nandi. Musendi revealed that in the first two years they were able to support 582 farmers’ agroforestry practices and have been able to sequester 1,327 carbon credit removals in Nandi County. “We are gathered here today to celebrate those pioneer farmers who are benefitting from our agroforestry initiatives,” Musendi told the press at Allens Hotel in Kapsabet town on Thursday. She insisted that their initiatives are spreading and targeting to include counties of Bomet, Kisii and Nyamira with aim of on-boarding close to 25,000 farmers by the year 2026.
The Government of Kenya and her partners have stepped up efforts to completely eradicate the practice of open defaecation in the country by the end of 2025. They said about 5 million Kenyans still practice open defaecation, 85 percent of whom are domiciled in 15 counties, and that strategies had been put in place to have them declared open defaecation free (ODF) by the end of 2025. This, they said, was being done through the Kenya Sanitation Alliance (KSA), which was launched in 2021 with the aim of eliminating open defaecation in Kenya by 2025 through a combination of policy interventions, community engagement and infrastructure development. The 15 counties identified as having the highest rates of open defaecation are Baringo, Garissa, Homabay, Isiolo, Kajiado, Kilifi, Kwale, Mandera, Marsabit, Narok, Samburu, Tana River, Turkana, Wajir and West Pokot. Senior health officials from the 15 high burden counties led by their County Health Executives and officials Ministry of Water and Sanitation and development partners UNICEF, USAID and AMREF among others, congregated at a Malindi hotel under the auspices of KSA to deliberating on the how to eradicate the vice.
Embu County has partnered with the KCB Foundation to provide free scholarships to 500 Vocational Training Centres (VTC) students in the county. Governor Mabarie stated that for every shilling the county invests in VTC, the KCB Foundation will invest a similar amount. “For every student in VTC that we give a full scholarship, they will offer another student the same,” she said.
The program aims to equip unemployed and out-of-school young men and women with technical skills to start their own businesses. The governor said the county has set aside funds for 250 students this financial year and expects a counteroffer from the partners. The program is intended for the neediest students across the county to give them an equal chance to realise their life goals.
Othaya constituency MP Wambugu Wainaina alias Mount Kenya held a consultative meeting with the Principals of all the area Day Secondary Schools at the local NG-CDF Hall where they explored on factors affecting good performance and ways for improvement the standards of education in the area. Through the MP’s Wambugu Wainaina Foundation, the teachers were given revision materials that are expected to help the learners continue to prepare for the forthcoming national examinations. The lawmaker also donated learning materials that are used during the examinations where each candidate will receive an Oxford geometrical set, Haco ruler, four pens and a staedtler pencil. The Foundation will also cater for examiners who will be training the Form 4 candidates in six grouped venues across the constituency
