Residents of Kiawara town in Kieni constituency along Nyeri-Nyahururu highway yesterday blocked the busy road, protesting lack fire engine in the area, which prompted a death of a local trader.
Hundreds of the traders and local residents demonstrated by lighting fire as they demanded audience with county leadership. This prompted Governor Mutahi Kahiga to rush to the scene where he instructed the Department of Gender Youth and Social services to deploy one fire engine that will be stationed at Kiawara for quick and efficient response.
Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) Kisii team scooped top prizes at the Kisii Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Show.
The event showcased the latest initiatives by KTDA, aligning with the event theme: ‘Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth’. Out of the 15 classes entered, the KTDA team won in 11 of them, and the remaining 4 emerged in position 2 .
The government has approved 13 more manufacturers and distillers of second-generation alcohol to operate, bringing the total to 15. The approved manufacturers include: Patiala Distillers Kenya Limited, Savannah Brands Company Limited, Kenya Wine Agencies Limited, Manchester Distillers Limited, FRM EA Packers Limited and Corobus Africa Products Limited. Others are Zheng Hong (K) Limited, Two Cousins Distillers Limited, Lyniber Supplies Limited, Elle Kenya Limited, Agro Chemical & Food Co. Limited, Crywan Enterprises and London Distiller Kenya Limited.
Kerugoya Boys High School in Kirinyaga Central, Kirinyaga County has been closed indefinitely after a fire razed down a dormitory on Saturday night.
Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Alosow said the fire started around 6:30 pm when students were attending evening preps.
“We are yet to establish the cause of the fire outbreak, we are still investigating,” the county commissioner said.
The fire razed down all the properties in the dormitory, leaving 120 students with nowhere to sleep.
“We have been told to go home until further notice and our parents have received messages,” said one of the students as they left for home yesterday.
Alasow had a hard time explaining to angry parents who arrived at the school on Saturday night fearing for the safety of their children and seeking answers on the cause of the fire.
Residents of Suna East Constituency have protested against the poor state of the roads in their area.
The angry residents led by Denis Ouma said that the Migori-Ngege-Uyoma road and Mabera- Got Jope road have been neglected for a long time posing dangers to road users.
Residents, who are dissatisfied with the state of the infrastructure, called upon their Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed to construct better roads to improve their mobility and business operations.
The demonstrators, who gathered on one of the roads in the Osingo area, expressed their worries, claiming that the state of the roads hinders their capacity to carry out business operations effectively.
Some 40 youth from the rural Nyanza region have been trained in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education program gaining technical and entrepreneurial skills to kick start their careers in the green economy.
The WeLearn project, implemented by the WeTu Organization in collaboration with development organisation Siemens Stiftung and the Ministry of Youth and Labour in Homabay, targets fresh high school graduates, providing them with hands-on vocational training.
This initiative seeks to broaden their horizons and interest in furthering technical and vocational training in TVET colleges.
In a press statement released on Saturday ahead of World Youth Skills Day on July 15, Rebecca Ottmann, Project Manager for Vocational Orientation in Africa at Siemens Stiftung, emphasized the program’s objective to introduce rural youth to the technical skills required for labor-intensive technologies and to strengthen their capacity to take up green jobs in the future.
“The project targets school graduates especially girls, in rural Kenya as we hope to present to these local youths the opportunities in the green economy and the technology sectors so they can hone their skills,” Ottmann stated.
